Sony just wrapped up this month's edition of the Playstation State of Play, and oh boy, there were definitely a plethora of new game reveals & long-awaited updates on upcoming games.

With the State of Play being the start of the summer games announcement season, how did Sony do with kicking off the season?  Let's see.

Marvel's Wolverine

In-engine screenshot from a cutscene in Marvel's Wolverine from Insomniac.

This edition of State of Play started with the already previously confirmed new look at Marvel's Wolverine from Insomniac Games.

We got a much more in-depth look at the gameplay, with new looks at using the environment to do things like kick an enemy into a tree or impale an enemy with construction equipment.  The combat looks, quite literally, bloody fantastic.

The visuals are also incredible to look at:  Marvel's Wolverine does not shy away from how violent it is, as enemies constantly gush out blood when hit or killed.  The disgustingly awesome visuals also apply to Logan, as all your scars and battle damage show and boy, they are graphic.  However, over time, your character model & health do regenerate as Wolverine does have a healing factor, of course.

First look at Sabretooth in Marvel's Wolverine.

After the gameplay look, we then got a proper trailer revealing some legacy X-Men characters that will be present in the game's story, including Jean Grey, Sabretooth, Mystique, & Omega Red.

Insomniac has also confirmed that in this continuity, the X-Men do not exist.  Instead, Logan works for an organization called Team X, a group who specializes in saving mutants around the world.

However, if you're someone who feels like Marvel's Wolverine is too gory, don't worry: Insomniac has confirmed that there will be an option to turn off the gore in-game.

Marvel's Wolverine releases exclusively on PS5 on September 15th, with pre-orders live on the Playstation Store right now.

Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls

Key art for the Knights of Doom team in Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, featuring Doctor Doom, Magneto, Green Goblin & Carnage.

Big news coming from Arc System Works - the next team of characters for Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls has been revealed.

After the last trailer teased Doctor Doom's team to be the next reveal, we finally got the name and members revealed to be the Knights of Doom, consisting of Doctor Doom and fellow villains Magneto, Green Goblin, & Carnage.

This reveal definitely saved fears from fans, as the game didn't have any other villains in the roster besides Doctor Doom until now.  However, Magneto was leaked a while ago, with his inclusion on the team seemingly confirming the other character leaked which for spoiler reasons, I won't say.

In-game screenshot of Green Goblin in Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls from Arc System Works.

The big surprises from the reveal, however, was the official fighting game debuts of Green Goblin & Carnage.  Tokon marks the first Marvel fighting game appearance for Goblin & the first official appearance in a Marvel fighting game, as he is a modded character in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Community Edition.

Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls releases on PS5 & PC on August 6th, with pre-orders for regular and deluxe editions that include the first season of DLC already avaiable.

Rayman Legends: Retold

Key art for Rayman Legends: Retold from Ubisoft.

While it was already leaked in the week prior, we finally got the official confirmation & reveal for Rayman Legends: Retold from Ubisoft, a remake/reimagining of 2013's Rayman Legends.

While the original was an entirely 2D platformer, Legends: Retold is a 2.5D platformer with 3D sections.  The game is more than just a visual overhaul, with completely brand new 3D sections, such as riding dragons & more autorunner levels.

The game, based off the trailer, also has new story elements with a new villain, so that will be interesting to see.

In-game screenshot of Rayman Legends: Retold.

The game is also now fully voice-acted, with Rayman, Globbox, Barbara, Grand Minimus & the new villain having full voice lines in the trailer.

With a new Rayman title finally coming out with Legends: Retold, will this game being success potentially lead to a completely brand-new Rayman game?  Let us know in the comments!

Rayman, Grand Minimus & Barbara in Rayman Legends: Retold.

Rayman Legends: Retold releases on PS5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch 2 & PC on October 1st, with pre-orders live including multiple editions that feature bonuses & in-game cosmetics inspired/from Rayman 3.

Additionally, as a HUGE bonus, all editions of the game, including the standard version, come with Rayman Origins: Enhanced Edition, a remaster of 2011's Rayman Origins, for completely free.

Fair warning to PC users - unless you're already planning on using this launcher, the Steam & Epic Games versions will launch the Ubisoft Connect DRM.

Bancho the Chef

Key art for Bancho the Chef from Mintrocket.

Big reveal from Mintrocket, as they announced Bancho the Chef, a prequel to their hit game Dave the Diver that follows Bancho and his journey travelling across Asia to become the chef he's known to be.

The gameplay sees you take on a variety of cooking minigames, going from place to place & mastering the culinary arts.  The best way to describe it, without trying to sound rude, is a Dave the Diver prequel following Bancho with Cooking Mama gameplay.

Bancho the Chef releases for PS5 & PC, with other platforms likely to be announcedNo release date as of right now, but the game is able to be wishlisted.

Kemuri: Hunt the Unseen

Key art for Kemuri: Hunt the Unseen from Unseen Studios.

Unseen Studios showed off their upcoming debut game, Kemuri: Hunt the Unseen, an anime-inspired action game directed by former Ghostwire: Tokyo director Ikumi Nakamura.

Set in the supernatural "Kemuri City," you play as a Yokai hunter in a colorful urban jungle, perfectly vertical for some fast movement.

While an action game, a key mechanic is the Yokai hunting, where you use a supernatural ability called the "Fox Window" to see and form contracts with Yokai, where you can then wear them as "Possession Apparel" that alters your appearance, movement & combat.  An almost Pokemon-like mechanic in a very InFamous looking game.

Screenshot of Hunter customization examples in Kemuri: Hunt the Unseen.

The combat doesn't shy away from customization either, as you can choose between three combat classes: katana hunter, bow hunter, or shaman.

The game also prioritizes movement & exploration thanks to the high, vertical city environments, where players can leap from rooftop-to-rooftop, use frog-like tongues to swing, or glide using feathered arms.

The game will also feature multiplayer, in which three people can get together to play online co-op, likely a player for each class.

Kemuri: Hunt the Unseen releases exclusively on PS5 as of right now, with a release date slated for some time in 2027.

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis

Key art for Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis from Crystal Dynamics

We also got another new look at Crystal Dynamics' Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis for the first time since the Game Awards back in December.

Without trying to sound like nothing noteworthy was shown in the trailer, we really just saw more of what happens in the story in this trailer.

As seen before, Legacy of Atlantis looks like Crystal Dynamics taking a lot of elements from the original six Tomb Raider games, such as the puzzles, environments & exploration, with a lot of elements from their critically acclaimed Survivor trilogy, such as having a more in-depth story and combat.

In-game screenshot of Lara Croft in Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis.

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis releases on PS5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch 2, & PC, with the original 2026 release window being delayed to an official date of February 12th, 2027.

Pre-orders are now live, with the $10 extra deluxe edition including a costume of Lara Croft in her Survivor trilogy outfit, as well as two-days early access.

The Lost Wild

Another debut title from a new studio was announced today, as Great Ape Games, with publishing from Annapurna Interactive, revealed The Lost Wild, a first-person survival horror game where you try to survive dinosaurs on a mysterious island.

The Lost Wild releases on PS5, Xbox Series & PC sometime in 2027.  Pre-orders are currently not available, but you can wishlist the game.

Phantom Blade 0

Key art for Phantom Blade Zero from S-Game Studio.

Next, we finally saw a new trailer for another game first shown at the Game Awards: Phantom Blade Zero from S-Game Studio, another debut title.

This upcoming action-RPG is set in a dark fantasy universe, mixing in elements of ancient Chinese mythology & martial arts with steampunk machinery.  You play as Soul, an assassin who's framed for the murder of his master.  After uncovering the truth, and with only 66 days left to live, you go on a quest to unravel a government conspiracy.

The combat is also very fleshed out, with over 30 weapons to unlock and use at your disposal throughout the course of the game.  If there's one thing the past Game Awards trailer & today's trailer wanted to emphasize, it's the combat.  And personally, that aspect alone makes this one of my most anticipated upcoming games.

In-game screenshot of Phantom Blade Zero.

While the gameplay does feature save areas and focuses a lot on boss fights, this game is NOT a Soulslike.  Instead, the combat and movement is a much more fast paced hack-and-slash along the lines of a Devil May Cry or Ninja Gaiden.

It was also announced during the showcase today that an extended gameplay & story showcase would air later this summer, so expect more news to come before September, as we'll be sure to cover it!

In-game screenshot of Soul in Phantom Blade Zero.

Phantom Blade Zero releases on PS5 & PC, with the original release date of September 9th being pushed back over a month and a half to October 28th.

Pre-orders are still unavailable as of right now, but you can wishlist the game.

Dune Awakening

Key art for Dune: Awakening from Funcom.

We finally got some more news on the console release date for Dune: Awakening from Funcom.  Not really much to say, as it's the same open-world survival PvE/PvP game set in the Dune universe that's been on PC for a year now.

While Dune: Awakening has been on PC since June 5th, 2025, the game will finally come to PS5  & Xbox Series on September 22, with pre-orders for the console ports available now.

Dynasty Warriors 3: Complete Edition Remastered

Key art for Dynasty Warriors 3: Complete Edition Remastered from Koei Tecmo.

New announcement from Koei Tecmo today with Dynasty Warriors 3: Complete Edition Remastered.  This a remake of the Musou/Warriors that set the standard for what a Warriors game should be.

This is going to be the definitive way to play Warriors 3, as this includes all content from the original Dynasty Warriors 3 on PS2, as well as all the content from its PS2 expansion pack, Xtreme Legends.  Additionally, the game also features a bunch of new modes, mechanics, & gameplay features.

Dynasty Warriors 3: Complete Edition Remastered releases on PS5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch 2 & PC on September 30th

Pre-orders are live right now, with a digital deluxe available that includes additional costumes, bonus items & art book.

No Rest for the Wicked

Key art for No Rest for the Wicked from Moon Studios.

We also saw a big Version 1.0 update announcement for No Rest for the Wicked from Moon Studios, the developers behind Ori and the Blind Forest & Ori and the Will of the Wisps.

This is a multiplayer action-RPG with town building, where you play as a group of warriors getting rid of a plague cursing a town.

The combat, instead of being more along the lines of a hack-and-slash, is actually more comparable to a Soulslike, as the gameplay encourages steady, patient, well-planned attacks

As to be expected from the masterminds behind the Ori series, No Rest for the Wicked is a visually beautiful game, with an art style that looks like it's coming right out of a fairy tale.

No Rest for the Wicked has been out on PC in early access since April 2024, with it receiving continuous updates as recent as April of this year.

However, the 1.0 update releases on PC, as well as the official launch of the game on PS5, sometime in October, with ports for Xbox Series & Nintendo Switch 2 planned for down the line.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword

New key art for Onimusha: Way of the Sword from Capcom.

Next, we finally got a new look at Onimusha: Way of the Sword, the long awaited next entry in Capcom's classic series.

Also revealed at the Game Awards last year, this next installment in the classic character action series sees you play as Miyamoto Musashi, a samurai looking to prove he's unmatched in the way of the sword (roll credits)

His story takes a turn, however, as the underworld starts to slowly, but surely, engulf Japan, as he has to fight the Genma, monsters & demons from the pits of Hell itself.

In-game screenshot of Onimusha: Way of the Sword.

While the Game Awards trailer already looked phenomenal, today's trailer looked absolutely breathtaking.  The combat, in traditional Capcom fashion with their legacy action titles in the modern day, looks faster, flashier & hard hitting as ever, with Musashi slicing his way through Genma.

And the game's visuals, from the set pieces of old Japan, to enemies getting sliced up, to all the effects flying around, look stunning in Capcom's in-house RE Engine.

While Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny is widely considered the best entry in the franchise, I'm going to go out on a limb and say Way of the Sword has a chance to take that spot when it releases.

In-game screenshot of Miyamoto Musashi in Onimusha: Way of the Sword.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword releases on PS5, Xbox Series & PC on September 24th, with pre-orders available right now for the standard, deluxe & premium deluxe versions.

However, there is also a free story & gameplay demo available on all platforms right now that even gets you a free cosmetic item in the full release once completed.  Go check it out, it's free!

Silent Hill: Townfall

Key art for Silent Hill: Townfall from Konami.

We got a new reveal from Konami in the form of Silent Hill: Townfall, the newest entry in the Silent Hill franchise.

In this entry, you play as Simon Ordell, a journalist who's called back to the town of St. Amelia to "put things right."

This game brings a bit of refreshment to the franchise, as it's from a first person point of view.  You'll use items like the CRTV, a pocket television used to tune in to unstable signals.

In-game screenshot of the CRTV in Silent Hill: Townfall.

Silent Hill: Townfall releases on PS5 & PC on September 24, with no current news on a potential Xbox port.

Pre-orders for the game are live, with a deluxe edition that grants you early access three days in advance.

Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve

Key art for Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve from Bandai Namco.

Next up, we got a big announcement from Bandai Namco - the Ace Combat series is returning with Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve.

Not much news about the story so far, but the game's said to have a heavy focus on its biggest campaign yet and refined online co-op.

Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve releases on PS5, Xbox Series & PC on October 1st, with pre-orders live right now with a deluxe edition that grants you three days early access.

Additionally, if you pre-order any version of the game, you'll get a free remastered version of Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War from the PS2.

Stuntman: Hollywood

Key art for Stuntman: Hollywood from Saber Interactive.

Saber Interactive surprised us, however, with the return of the Stuntman series with Stuntman: Hollywood, the first new Stuntman game since 2007's Stuntman: Ignition.

It's your classic action & puzzle-racing series where you perform dangerous stunts in all kinds of vehicles, however this time around you'll be recreating scenes inspired by blockbuster Hollywood films & shows, from Back to the Future to Knight Rider and The Fast & The Furious.

In-game screenshot of the DeLorean from Back to the Future in Stuntman: Hollywood.

Stuntman: Hollywood releases on PS5, Xbox Series & PC at some point in the future.  The release date is currently TBD, so we'll have to keep an eye on any upcoming showcases or posts from Saber in the future.

ILL

Key art for ILL from Team Clout

Another debut title was announced at the State of Play, with ILL from Team Clout, a realistic first-person action horror game that takes you into a dark forest overtaken by a mysterious entity.

This game promises to showcase intense body-horror visuals & a realistic physics engine, with grotesque monsters to fend off using a tactically managed layout of weapons.

The game also promises to have a bone-chilling narrative, with some help from writers who've worked on blockbuster horror films & shows such as Longlegs & It: Welcome to Derry, just to name a few.

ILL releases on PS5, Xbox Series & PC sometime in 2027.  Pre-orders are currently unavailable, but you can wishlist the game right now.

CONTROL: Resonant

New key art for CONTROL: Resonant from Remedy.

Joining the list of new trailers for games announced at the Game Awards is the highly anticipated CONTROL: Resonant from Remedy, the sequel to the 2019 cult-classic CONTROL

This action-RPG sees you play as Dylan Faden, the brother of the first game's protagonist Jesse, as you unleash his extraordinary powers and explore a warped Manhattan on the brink of paranatural annihilation.

This game, so far, seems to lean a lot more into the combat aspect of the game, with weapons at your disposal and even an almost hack-and-slash combo system.

In-game screenshot of CONTROL: Resonant.

CONTROL: Resonant releases on PS5, Xbox Series & PC on September 24th, with pre-orders live including a digital deluxe edition.

The game is currently slated to be featured as part of the PCGamer PC Gaming Show this week, but no current news on if the game will get any new trailers or real-time gameplay footage.  In the event that there is, you can be sure that we'll keep you covered.

Marathon Season 2: Nightfall

Key art for Marathon Season 2: Nightfall from Bungie.

Bungie made an announcement in the presentation, announcing that their current main game Marathon was entering it's second season with Nightfall.

Not much needed to be said about the new season, as it's your general battle royale/shooter update: new maps, new weapons, new cosmetics.

In-game screenshot of Marathon Season 2: Nightfall.

Marathon has been available for PS5, Xbox Series & PC since March 5th of this year, with Nightfall now live.

However, if you're curious about the game and if it's for you, the game is currently free-to-play until June 9th at 9:00 AM CST.  So if you've been curious about if the game is for you, might as well try it while it's free!

RuneScape: Dragonwilds

Key art for RuneScape: Dragonwilds from Jagex.

We got another update on a game that's been in early access for a while getting it's definitive 1.0 release, with RuneScape: Dragonwilds from Jagex.

This newest addition to the RuneScape universe is a co-op survival crafting game that takes place on RuneScape's forgotten continent of Ashenfall, where dragons have woken up.

You'll have to master survival and uncover ancient secrets in hope to slay the Dragon Queen, with the heart of RuneScape at its core.

In-game screenshot of RuneScape: Dragonwilds.

RuneScape: Dragonwilds has been in early access on PC since April 15th, 2025, but it's full 1.0 release comes to PC & PS5 sometime in Fall 2026.

Additionally, the PS5 version will be a part of the PlayStation Plus subscription service when it releases.

New Titles Coming to PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog

Upcoming games slated to join the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog, including Gitaroo Man, Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy & Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams.

Speaking of PlayStation Plus, we got a look at three new games coming to the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog.

First is the cult-classic Gitaroo Man for the PS2, a rhythm game developed by Koei Tecmo along the lines of Samba de Amigo, where you play as U-1 and compete in riff-offs with your trusty guitar.  This will be joining the Classics Catalog in June.

Next is Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy, a PS2 action-adventure third-person shooter developed by Midway that sees you play as Nick Scryer, an elite psi-soldier with a wiped memory trying to take down a terrorist organization.  This will be joining the Classics Catalog in July.

Last, but certainly not least, is Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams, the fourth entry in Capcom's long running franchise from the PS2.  You play as Soki, AKA the "Blue Demon", in this action-adventure where you try to stop the Genma demons from invading Japan.  This will be joining the Classics Catalog in August.

Until Dawn 2

Logo for Until Dawn 2 from Ballistic Moon.

The second-to-last announcement was news of a big sequel for a PlayStation exclusive - Until Dawn 2 from Playstation Studios & Ballistic Moon, a sequel of the critically acclaimed Until Dawn is now officially in development.

The trailer doesn't give away too much of the plot, but it's classic Until Dawn.  This cinematic, decision-based story game will see you follow a group of young adults trying to enjoy a vacation on an island, until everything suddenly goes wrong.

Just like the first entry, you'll have to encounter the narrative and make difficult choices on who gets to live & who has to die.

Potential in-game screenshot of Until Dawn 2.

Until Dawn 2 releases exclusively on PS5 sometime in 2027.  Pre-orders are currently unavailable, but you can wishlist the game now.

God of War: Laufey

Key art for God of War: Laufey from Sony Santa Monica Studios.

The final announcement from this edition of the State of Play was a rumor that came true - God of War: Laufey is the next installment in Sony Santa Monica Studios' God of War series, as we got 20 minutes of uncut footage of the game at the end of the showcase.

Taking place immediately after Laufey's death in the 2018 God of War game, you play as Laufey, wife of Kratos & mother of Atreus as her soul gets taken to Valhalla, where everything has seemingly gone wrong.

Other mythologies, namely the union of the Mongolian & Egyptian Gods of War have taken over, and it's up to Laufey to bring balance & restore Valhalla.

In-game screenshot of the Mongolian & Egyptian Gods of War in God of War: Laufey.

While we definitely got our fair share of in-game cinematics, we of course also got a look at the combat in this next installment in the action game series.

The gameplay in this entry is a lot faster & more combo focused, along the lines of Devil May Cry or the original God of War trilogy, from faster, snappier swordplay to air-combos.

Additionally, in the story, you'll meet a gelatinous cube name Phranque, your companion in this game, who can morph into enemies to use at your will & give your combos a boost.  If you watched the trailer and recognized his voice, that's because he's voiced by Jack Quaid, who you may know as Hughie in The Boys.

In-game screenshot of the combat in God of War: Laufey.

God of War: Laufey releases exclusively on PS5 at some point in the future, thought it's likely to assume that the game will be released sometime in 2027.

That being said, it does raise the question on if Sony Santa Monica is developing both Laufey and the God of War Trilogy: Remake at the same time.  Who knows?

God of War: Laufey is currently unavailable for pre-order, but you can currently wishlist the game.

And that was everything announced from the June 2nd PlayStation State of Play!  What was your favorite announcement?  What did you think of the showcase?  Let us know in the comments below!
